HISTORY

Monmouth County Department of Tourism
(732) 431-7476

Monmouth County was named after Monmouthshire, Wales and established in 1675. In 1778 General George Washington's soldiers defeated the British under Sir Henry Clinton, in the Battle of Monmouth, near Freehold. The battle was technically a tactical draw, as it had no particular benefit for either side, but the Americans were left on the field, with the British having withdrawn. It was largest battle of the American Revolutionary War. Freehold Borough has been known as the "Bicycle Capital of the World." It is home to the "Bicycle Museum" located on Main Street. Originally part of "Shrewsbury Towne", Red Bank was named in 1736. By 1844, Red Bank had become a commercial center for textiles, fur, tanning, and manufacturing goods for sale in Manhattan. In 1845 the Navesink River became a port for steamboats to transport commuters to Manhattan.
